The aging process takes its toll on your appearance in a variety of ways. In addition to the formation of wrinkles, some men and women find their jawline fluctuates over time, either as the result of skin laxity or the formation of submental fat underneath the chin. This double chin look can be a source of embarrassment for aging adults, sometimes even more than those facial creases. In the past, elimination of submental fat involved a surgical procedure like liposuction or a facelift. Today, there is an injectable treatment that destroys the pocket of fat and gives you a more youthful facial profile.
Submental fullness or fat is the accumulation of fat and tissue underneath the jawline that makes you look as though you have a double chin. In 2015, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery conducted a study to find out just how bothersome submental fat was for adults. They discovered that around two-thirds of those questioned said they were troubled by the deposit of fat underneath the chin. That number equated to the percentage of adults distressed by the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.
Submental fat may make you look as though you have gained weight, but that is not the only cause of the problem. Other factors might include genetics and the aging process. No matter what the underlying reason for the submental fat might be, most of us find that no amount of diet or exercise will make it disappear.
Kybella is an injectable treatment that allows you to say goodbye to submental fat without surgery. The prescription medication contains the active ingredient deoxycholic acid, which works in the body to assist in the absorption of fat. When it is injected into the area underneath the chin, the deoxycholic acid destroys fat cells in the treatment area, allowing them to be eliminated by the body’s natural processes. As the fat cells are flushed away, the chin becomes smoother, sleeker and more defined.
Kybella is an effective choice for men and women with good skin tone, who are disturbed by pockets of fat underneath the chin. If you have significant skin laxity in addition to the fat accumulation, Kybella may not produce the full results you desire. However, Dr. Lensink also offers a Quicklift treatment that may provide you with a more satisfying outcome.
Dr. Lensink will evaluate your situation, including the amount of fat you have, the elasticity of your skin and other aging concerns to determine whether Kybella is the right solution for you.
Dr. Lensink performs Kybella injections in his office, taking just a few minutes to complete the treatment in most cases. He will begin by marking a grid pattern on the underside of the chin to note where the injections will be placed. You may receive anywhere from 25 to 50 injections, depending on the amount of fat that needs to be addressed. Dr. Lensink will ensure even placement of the injections so that your results are balanced and symmetrical.
The treatment area may also be anesthetized or numbed with ice to ensure your comfort during the injection process. Injections are then performed using a small needle to place the medication into the fat deposit.
After your procedure, the area may be red and swollen. You may feel a burning sensation, which can be alleviated by ice packs. Some patients return to work right after treatment, while others wait until the next day to resume their regular activities. Most patients do not have significant discomfort that interferes with their ability to perform their daily tasks.
You won’t see the results of your Kybella treatment right away. In fact, the area under your chin may look more pronounced for a couple of weeks after your procedure until the treatment area heals fully and the body eliminated the destroyed fat cells. Within a matter of weeks, you should start to notice your jawline becoming more defined, with an obvious decrease in the submental fat underneath your chin.
Because the fat is destroyed and eliminated, the results of your Kybella treatment will be permanent. If Kybella sounds like the right procedure for you, contact Dr. Lensink’s office today at 530-229-7700 to schedule your consultation.
